Sidi Bou Said & The Palace of the Baron d'Erlanger

x

Known for its cobbled streets and blue-and-white houses, Sidi Bou Said is a charming town on a promontory overlooking the Mediterranean, with al fresco cafes, Tunisian eateries, and small art galleries. The international fame of the village was acquired in 1912 thanks to an English baron who built a magnificent palace (a must see). Sidi Bou Said became then a place of rest and inspiration to many artists, musicians and writers such as Chateaubriand, Gustave Flaubert, Alphonse de Lamartine, André Gide, Colette, Simone de Beauvoir, etc.

Roman ruins of Carthage

x

Carthage was an ancient city in modern Tunisia. It developed from a Phoenician colony into one of the most affluent cities of the classical world and capital of the Punic empire.
The ancient city was destroyed by the Roman Republic in the Third Punic War after the Battle of Carthage (c. 149 BC) and later rebuilt as Roman Carthage, which became capital of the Roman province of Africa.
Today, Carthage is a wealthy suburb of Tunis surrounded by gardens full of red hibiscus blossoms and purple bougainvillea.
Despite their ruinous state, these UNESCO World Heritage Site remnants are one of the top things to do in Tunis and definitely worth a sightseeing trip to take in the atmosphere of a glorious, long-gone past and admire their beautiful setting backed by the sea.

The Bardo national museum is the second museum of the African continent after the Egyptian Museum of Cairo by richness of its collections.
It traces the history of Tunisia over several millennia and across several civilizations through a wide variety of archaeological pieces.
The museum houses one of the largest collections of Roman mosaics in the world, such as the Virgil Mosaic, a unique source for research on everyday life in Roman Africa.
From the Roman era, the museum also contains a rich collection of marble statues representing the deities and the Roman emperors found on different sites including those of Carthage.
